ASSIGNMENTS - Spring 2009

Informal written assignments - 20% of grade

Reading circles (10% each): Students will participate in reading circles, in which they will take a variety of roles as active critical readers to intensify the class's collective grasp of the implications of the reading.   Roles are listed at this link .   Each circle member will take a different role for each of the assigned readings and contribute your insights to class discussion of the text. Student work in reading circles will be evaluated based on individual portfolios.   In your portfolio, collect notes, visuals, clippings, and any other material relevant to your preparation for each of the readings.   Portfolios will be evaluated based on completeness, grasp and application of course concepts, as well as any special contributions that enhance the scope and vitality of the course.

Formal Written Assignments - 40%

Short response essays (2-3 pages each) - 20%

Silent Spring response essay (10%):
