"What Will I Be?"

This article discusses the importance of education in our society and how education is viewed in different class levels.   Middle-class daughters are affected by gender based norms.   They are encouraged to pursue traditionally female careers such as teaching.   The girl who took business classes was encouraged to become a typist.   This is only training to be in a secretarial position.   It mentions how young children adjust their occupational aspirations to fit their developing images of themselves and where they belong in terms of gender, class, abilities, and interests.   Occupations are classified in terms of sex and class.     -B.D.
