Ehrenreich, Barbara. Bait and Switch: the (Futile) Pursuit of the American Dream . Owl Books, 2006.

The chapter entitled "Stepping Out into the World of Networking" is a feminist perspective on the politics of finding a job.   Ehrenreich provides commentary on her experiences of job searching, and the seemingly endless hours of time spent on the internet, specifically using job search engines.   Through the detailed descriptions of her daily routine of being jobless, Ehrenreich gives explicit tips for those coping with job related stress.   Among the important topics discussed are attitude, commitment, confidence and contacts.   This self-narrated piece incorporates personal struggle as an empathetic tool to readers to show that they are not alone.   From a feminist perspective, networking can often seem too nepotistic or privileged, but Ehrenreich reinforces the importance of reaching out and having confidence in one's self.   It is important to note that feminism is not explicitly stated within this piece; however, the advice given is underhandedly feminist and appropriate for all jobseekers, politics aside.    - B.H.
