Dickinson, Torry D. and Robert K Schaeffer. Fast Forward: Work, Gender, and Protest in a Changing World . Chapter 12, "Diversifying Struggles: Redefining Work and Society."
This piece addresses the importance of nonwage workers in global labor struggles. Dickinson and Schaeffer contend that nonwage workers have created ways of sustaining life outside the capitalist system that are more egalitarian and democratic in nature. Additionally, Dickinson and Schaeffer argue that the economic and political institutions created by nonwage workers may be a basis for future societies. Through various articles and specific examples of nonwage workers' groups, Dickinson and Schaeffer illustrate how people can work outside of capitalism. Dickinson and Schaeffer also make ties to feminism and gender throughout the article because nonwage workers are generally female, but also because feminism is connected with creating egalitarian societies. This piece does not really allow for other interpretations or counter arguments mainly because of its use of examples to prove its thesis. This article would be most useful as support for working outside of capitalism. -C.D.
