Selling Sex for Visas

            Women around the world become sex workers because they do not have any other choice.   They can get a legal job that forces them to work ridiculous amounts of hours for minimal pay, or they can work as a prostitute and make more in a week than legal jobs make in a month.   When faced with the choice between legal work and sex work--there really is not a choice.
            The sex workers in Sosua are different from what one normally thinks of when dealing with prostitutes.   Most of the women here work independently and for themselves, rather than having encounters set up by pimps and therefore having to hand most of their profits over.   These women are in the business for survival and the hopes of getting a better life for themselves and their families.
            Although these women are "freer" than the typical prostitute and many "choose" sex work over legal work, many would rather be working legally.   While it may seem to others than they are using their freewill, it is really the oppressions of society and a poor economy that drive these women to make these "choices."   - M.J.
